Blue Fin Yachts tests new marine coatings

Blue Fin Yachts has always been at the forefront of testing and applying the latest coatings to ensure that super yachts perform at their maximum potential. Over the last two years, the company has applied super-hydrophobic ceramic nano coatings to several client vessels to give them the edge in performance.

Blue Fin is now about to commence a four-month trial of a range of new slippery ceramic coatings to test them for effectiveness. Between December 2019 and March 2020, these samples will be immersed in typical marina sea conditions and will be tested at the end to evaluate their effectiveness in organotin-free fouling release (this means “neutral” for marine environment).

These new coatings are designed to shed the algae and marine growth which traditional antifouling was designed to kill using TBCs and copper. With the ever-increasing stringency of environmental clampdowns on toxic chemical-based antifouling, the industry is in serious need of a new generation of such bio coatings which can simultaneously improve performance on racing and high-speed vessels.

Blue Fin MD Nick Barber said: “This is the first of a series of carefully monitored research tests which I hope will deliver real benefit to the industry. I invite our coating manufacturer colleagues in the trade to contact me with more new products we can test in the near future.”

Blue Fin will release the results of its first phase of tests during the second quarter of 2020 and invites proposals now from the industry for new coating technologies to be tested during Phase Two of its test schedule which will commence in Summer 2020.

Proposals for new coatings to be tested in Phase Two should be sent to Blue Fin MD Nick Barber at nick.barber@bluefinyacht.com.
